David was born on September 15, 1789 in Rockbridge County, Virginia the son of James and Mary Ann Foster Pinkerton. He married Celia Barnes on April 6, 1811 in Davidson County, Tennessee. The couple emigrated from Tennessee to Greene County in 1823, when David returned from fighting in the Battle of New Orleans. He and Celia had twelve children including Henry, James, Wiley, John, David, Rhoda, Andrew, Luther, Mary Ann, Willis, Pelina, and Elizabeth.

David was elected to the office of County Treasurer in 1847 for two years. His signature often appears in the early records of Greene County. He continued to reside on his farm between Macoupin and Apple Creeks, Greene County, Illinois until his death on October 4, 1853. He was buried in the Pinkerton Cemetery #2.
