Mary Jane Pruett was born in Allen Township (now Rock Port), Gentry, Missouri. Her place of birth is found on the 1850 census for Allen Township, Gentry County, Missouri taken November 23, 1850.
The township of Allen was changed to Rock Port in Gentry County, Missouri. The Pruett or Pruitt surname changed it's spelling when Mary Jane & John D. Scott named their 10th child, Mary Pruett, at her birth. Both are correct to the early & later generations.

She married John D. Scott when she was fifteen years old. It may have been because of her age that they decided to go over the state line from Iowa where both were living, to be married May 13, 1865 in Buchanan, Atchison County, Missouri. They had eleven children.

Mary Jane died from complications of paralysis, near the town of Niwot, now a ghost town. It is near Santa Anna, Texas. Her funeral was held August 4, 1905.
