Lucy Ann (Byers) Scott, memorial #207253358, and Charles were a couple who were not permitted to marry. They lived quietly as husband and wife for all intent and purposes for many years having a family and raising them together. The 1910 Census for Fulshear, Fort Bend, Texas shows Charles B. Scott and Lucy Ann Byers living in the same house. She was mulatto and he was white. Charles is shown as Head of Household. Lucy is shown as Servant and their children as Boarders. It was illegal in Texas until 1967 for interracial marriages to take place between mixed races. This was the only way for them to live together as a family.
Charles died on a Thursday at Providence Hospital in El Paso. He had lived at Hotel Oasis in the El Paso area for twenty-two years. On Saturday, November 3rd a rosary in his memory was held at Saint Patrick's Cathedral with his burial following.
Note: Death Certificate. The year of his birth is incorrect on certificate as informant was from Carmen (Carrasco) Scott, his wife (divorced).
