INJURY TO NECK FATAL TO FISHERTOWN FARMER
Going to church at Bethel park camp grounds, Fishertown, Sunday morning in his automobile, John S. Bender, aged 58, a farmer residing at Fishertown, collided with a heavy hitching cable, which struck him on the neck, fracturing the larnyx. Not realizing that he was badly injured, he remained and took an active part in the services being conducted there by the Pine Grove Evangelical church of which he was an active member.
After the services, he started to Bedford to consult a physician. His condition became critical while on the way and his companion, Charles Walter of Cessna, finished the drive, arriving at the office of Dr. H. A. Shimer here, just as Mr. Bender expired.
Those who had witnessed the accident urged him to see a doctor immediately, but Mr. Bender, certain that his injuries were of a minor nature, insisted that he take his ususal part in the Sunday School exercises.
He stated repeatedly that he was in no pain and jovially protested when his friends, noting that he was becoming hoarse, finally brought sufficient pressure to bear on their requests as to convince him that the services of a physician were necessary.
Mr. Bender is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Bailey Bender and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Claycomb, of Cessna, and Mrs. Steve Callis, East Freedom; two sons, Bailey, of South Carolina, and Dwight, at home; and one adopted daughter, Mrs. John Wolf.
Funeral services were conducted at the home, Wednesday morning at 9:30 by Rev. Smith. Interment was made at Osterburg, Pa.
