Elizabeth (Betsy) Hazzard was born November 1, 1807 to John and Roxanna (Wood) Hazard, probably in Chenango Co., NY. She was a descendant of the old and distinguished Haz(z)ard family. Many of her ancestors were people of note. They were refined, cultured, church working people who were sincere, dependable, and always doing their part to help their fellow man. Betsey received her basic schooling in the schools of NY state. However, her widowed father, a Methodist minister of some renown emigrated with his 3 children, Betsey, Dencey, and Alfred, to the undeveloped Ohio country in 1816. Betsey was 9 years old at the time, and records cannot be found as to whether she received further schooling in Ohio. It is presumed, however, that she did, because after her marriage and after the Bunns came to Illinois in 1838, it is known that she taught school at least one rural school term, and she may have taught others.

On June 22, 1826, Betsey married Hyatt Bunn in Wayne Co., Ohio. They had 11 children, 6 of which were born in Ohio. Two of those children died in Ohio. While they made the trek from Ohio to Illinois, she carried the fourth of her remaining children, William Benton in her arms. After their migration to Illinois, they had 5 more children.

She was a devout Christian lady, a leader in church and neighborhood activities. She died in Richland Co., IL, probably in 1868, but possibly in 1863.
