Wm. R. Anderson, Civil War Veteran, is Dead at Auburn
William R. Anderson, 95, a Civil war veteran residing at 234 South Center street, Auburn, died Wednesday morning at 4 o’clock at his home following an illness of six weeks. A blood clot on his leg was the immediate cause of death. Mr. Anderson was born January 14, 1843 in Darke county, Ohio. He was one of the first thirty-five from Greenville to enlist in the Civil war, and served during the entire four years’ duration of the fighting. He took part in the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, and was stationed for most of the time in the vicinity of Chattanooga. He was with Sherman on his famous march to the sea. At the close of the war, he was honorably discharged at Baltimore, returning to Darke county, where he married Miss Louisa Green July 27, 1865. They moved September 12, 1871 to the Whitley county farm near Blue Lake, where they resided for fifty-two years. Mr. Anderson had lived in Auburn for thirteen years. To Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were born twelve children, three of whom died at an early age. The surviving children are George, of 246 South Center St., Auburn, Lewis of Ft. Wayne, Clarence of Whitley county, Aleary of Whitley county, Edward of Allen county, Charles of Detroit, Mich., [county, Charles of Detroit, Mich.][sic], William Ira of Whitley county, Mrs. Sarah Cremer of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Minnie Barrett of Auburn, with whom Mr. Anderson resided. His wife died seven years ago. There are also twelve grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, Nancy Lou Gordon of Churubusco, as well as one brother, Jonathan, of Randolph county. The body was taken to the Dilgard funeral home pending funeral arrangements. The Churubusco American Legion post will conduct services and burial will be in the Eel River cemetery south of Churubusco.
