J. P. (Buck) Burney was born in Vivian, Louisiana on January 30, 1920. He peacefully passed away in his sleep early Monday morning, November 23, 2009. He was 89 years old and lived a wonderful life. Buck was a devoted family man, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved being around everyone. He loved children and animals and will always be remembered as having a wonderful smile, quick wit, and a kind word for all.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Louise Burney. Buck has two children, Jimmie Paul Burney, Jr. and his wife Claire Childers Burney and Janice Nan Brennan and her husband Lawrence Michael Brennan. Buck has 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Grandchildren are Anthony Jay Reeves, Derek Paul Burney and his wife Lori Ann, Courtney Claire Reeves (deceased), Neal Shawn Burney and his wife Lisa Ann, Michael Scott Brennan, David Paul Brennan and his wife Brigit Skye, and William Patrick Brennan and his wife Jennifer Dawn. Great grandchildren are Braden Paul Burney, Kamerann Elizabeth Burney, Liam Brownlee Brennan, and Eli Paul Brennan.

Buck worked his entire career for Wilson Industries and retired as Vice President of the Machinery Division. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1942 and became a B-17 pilot. Buck flew 35 missions with the 834 Bombardment Squadron, 486 Bombardment Group (Heavy) 8th Air force in England and was discharged in June 1945 as a First Lieutenant with full military honors. He received the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign medal with 1 Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal. Buck was a former member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church of Vivian, Louisiana and The Woodlands United Methodist Church, The Woodlands, Texas. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, Texas and a 32nd Degree Mason. Buck was the quintessential outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and golf. He also loved to play cards and dominos.

Memorial Services will be held at the Vivian Cemetery, Vivian, Louisiana at 12 PM on Saturday December 5 followed by a celebration of his life at the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Centerville Community, Vivian, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the Alzheimer's Association Arlington Branch 401 W. Sanford #200 Arlington, Texas, 76011 and/or the Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum PO Box 1992 Savannah, Georgia 31402.
