Marshall used car dealer, along with brother Murray. Husband of Elizabeth Conley, who is buried in Scipio, Utah. Three sons: Johnny Wayne, David, and Daniel Murray ("Tucker").

Grave in Algoma Cemetery North is located on the NW section, close to the mausoleum.

As a young man, John won a singing contest and advanced to the finals in New York City. There, he advanced to the finals, but he was too low on funds to stay, so he returned to Marshall. The other finalist, another unknown: Frank Sinatra. John's sister sang professionally.

John operated a taxicab service based out of Marshall's Ginnochio Hotel, at the train station. Over time, that enterprise evolved into selling cars. He was known for decades as "Honest John Conley." The car lot was located on Marshall's Grand Ave. (US Highway 80) near the traffic circle (now a redlight) where it crossed US Highway 59, a route running north from Houston to Texarkana.

John loved good literature, and he memorized poetry.

John Conley was a plain spoken man, oftentimes blunt. He used extra words, but only for spice and color. After he passed, his sons made note of some of his sayings, along with notes about the people and places that populated John's world in Marshall Texas.

M E M O R I E S
Boy hidee!
I don't care if syrup goes to a dollar a sop.
It tasted like the front page of the Dallas Morning News.
You want to sit here Mr. Lancaster?
I was talkin' to a boy a week, week and half, two weeks ago and he told me he thought it was hotter'n all git out.
He's got the forneykuboogerie...in the advanced stages.
He so crooked he has to screw his britches on.
The diffrence between this and that is the same as the difference between riding and walking.
She was so pretty I wouldn't ask what her name was until the third child was born.
We had a room so small I didn't have room to change my mind.
Our room was so small, everytime I smiled, my teeth hit the wall.
Aunt Pootie.
Whistlebritches.
Lucy June Hossenfokker.
THUMPBUCKET.
Heavens to murgatroit.
The most important thing you'll ever do in this life is marry the right person.
That's laripin' good!
His pants looked like a family of nubians had moved out of the seat.
If I tell you a grasshopper can pull a freight train , don't ask me how,
just hook up the trace chains.
We ate on 'til about dark thirty.
She looked like she swapped legs with a mockingbird and got beat out in the end.
How's my little lammikins?
She's just a darlin' angel... and you're a screwheaded bum.
The only thing wrong with so and so is he's just a little bit crooked.
The only wrong with the Church is it's right...about everything.
Most of the world's problems are caused by false religion.
I have never heard the Church ask us to do anything that was silly or nutty.
J. Reuben Clark, on his death bed, prayed that he could endure to the end. Now I know what he meant.
I love a good car.
You can spend more money, but you can't buy a better car than a Chevrolet.
The spare tire had never been out of the trunk and the tailpipe was white.
Nothing will do more for how a car handles than a new set of tires.
I get dark spots on my white suits and white spots on my dark suits.
Let's all turn to page 93 and sing what's left of the last verse.
The only thing wrong with Packard was they just started making ugly cars.
I'd give my eye teeth for one of those.
My daddy told me if I ever wanted to leave home again the door was open.
That corn grew so fast it wore the ears out dragging them along the ground.
"There was only one man scalped by the Owens River Indians that year. That man was William Breckenridge Carruthers III ...of New Jersey."
From "Aurelia's Unfortunate Young Man" by Mark Twain.
He wore his pants so high he had to unzip to spit. If they had been any higher, I would have said so.
Just like white folks.
You get an education from reading.
Experience is a dear school but a fool will learn in no other.
About the worst kind of trouble is money trouble.
Don't ever take another man's bet.
If someone tells you you can't lose, walk away.
Elizabeth, Emory's not dead. He's asleep.
Be good to your wife.
Don't run faster than you have strength.
There is wisdom is a multitude of counsel.
Do not grab a mad dog by the ears.
There's a deer track... a dear old cow track.
Come here, I want to read you something. It'll only take a minute.
I don't know how people expect to learn anything about the church without reading about it.
He is certifiable.
Elizabeth, have we lost our minds?
Just have a boy cut through the field.
All you need to do is change brands.
How do you get out of here to Waxahachie?
This is my first wife.
If I wasn't home by 8 o'clock, my parents would rent my room out.
When I was 9 years old, my parents moved in with me.
He is as nutty as fruitcake.
He's not just crazy, he's mean.
He is as crazy as a June bug.
Cadillac is one of the sorriest cars ever made.
I wouldn't give nickel for a boat load of them.
All that car needs is a loving home and a big dose of highway.
He won't patch it. When he fixes it, it'll be fixed right. Plumb. It won't be no po'boy operation. You won't say he did a pretty good job. You'll say it's like new, better than new.
The trouble with the human race was they tended to overdo everything, and to great extent that's true.
Wayne Lancaster was the kindest and funniest man I ever knew.
I can't describe to you how awful it was. you would just have to see it.
That house had so many termites, it would fall over if the termites weren't holding hands.
I want to know if the United States is going Communist, and if so, who with?
If you will take care of your car, it will almost run forever.
Do you think it's unlucky to sleep 13 people in a bed on a Friday night?
If I could sell that car I would shake hands with everybody in seven states.
Come here to me you little heifer.
How is business? A guy passed by here on a bus a while ago and he looked over this way.
When I say she can sing, I mean really sing. Not jus a little bit.
When I was in the army, they gave me a complete physical. I mean they looked everywhere. They looked in my ears. They looked down my throat. They even looked up my bu_irth certificate.
Wayne Lancaster could go into and out of businesses faster than anybody I ever saw.
It's bad enough to die for something, but it's a lot worse to die for nothing.
Pride is what's wrong with most people. It is a terrible thing.
She had a figure like Daisy Mae.
She had a figure like Stupefyin' Jones.
You can put that in the bank.
Darkness covers the earth, and gross darkness the minds of the people. Book of Amos
And the rebellious were pierced with much sorrow.
I will do things ye look not for.
Ye receive not because ye ask not.
Shut up Otis, You don't know nothin'. Let Mr. Conley talk.
Ah is so mizzuble.
I got the hang downs.
That little boy is worried about the Russians.
He is as good as gold.
Marshall is the sorriest, meanest little town there ever was. I must be crazy. Let's move to Utah.
This is the finest boy in seven states.
That dog wouldn't bite a steak.
We had two or three million beans for supper.
"Let's go for a walk in the cool and peaceful and wait 'til supper gets ready".
From Pogo by Walt Kelly
When I get to Heaven, the first thing I am going to do is ask Marie Antoinette if she really said "Let them eat cake".
The best gas mileage you'll ever get is going from Tucumcari to Amarillo. It's got a tail wind and it's down hill all the way.
It made me lose the last rags of my religion.
We're going to Saint Lawk City.
You better close that deal right now because if he sleeps on it, he'll change his mind.
I don't know why Joseph Smith would have lied about having a vision. Why would anybody lie about a thing like that?
You can't ever have too much money.
Don't do anything off center or oddball. Do the thing that works.
Make that money while you can. Don't let the sun go down until you have made that deal.
Boy, I love that dry air.
That'air air is good.
As fine as frog's hair.
Smooth as cat's fur.
Rougher than a cob.
High as a kite.
Hottern' a firecracker.
Colder than well-digger's butt.
Crazy as a June bug.
We'll be there directly.
He's somethin' ain't he!
Turn it like you live... hard! (making ice cream)
One of the sorriest white men I ever met.
When I say it was red, I don't just mean sort of red, I mean red red. real red. Red'ern all git out
If you can sing parts, you can leave my part out.
See those birds? They don't know anything about the theory of flight.
There goes my girl.
I never saw Charlie Chaplin do anything I thought was funny.
Laurel & Hardy.. I love those guys. They are both slap crazy.
Come on Mom, let's dance.
Give me another dip of that.
I hope nobody gets hurt.
When buying a buggy load of toilet tissue, Dad would say to the clerk "We're expecting company".
