Son of John Thomas Caldwell & Elizabeth Eakler. Samuel married Susan Landis on 10 Mar 1831 in Portage Co., Ohio. They had five children; Edwin b. 1832, Amy Roena b. 1833, Putnam F. b. 1834, Epenetus B. b. 1836, and Samuel Landis Caldwell b. 16 Dec 1837.

Samuel is buried in Plat 9, Lot 5 in Hawley Cemetery, Paris Township, Portage Co., Ohio, near his father and mother. Samuel died at age 29 of diabetes, the first of their thirteen children to die. This record is found in a book written by Lucy Lucille Caldwell Stotts, daughter of Louis N. Caldwell and Lucy E. Surbaugh, granddaughter of Nicholas Caldwell and Abigail Jane Curtis.

Update: July 17, 2011
In an old tombstone transcription book of Trumbull Co., Ohio cemeteries, is a transcription of the Hawley Cemetery in Portage County. There is a record of Elizabeth and John Caldwell, and next to them is Samuel Colwell, age 29y 2m.

Source: The Portage County Genealogical Society, Ravenna, Ohio 1994, Portage County Ohio Cemeteries Volume III Paris Township and Charlestown Township 1819-1993, pg 3, 977.137 V3p v. 8.
"Samuel Caldwell, son (sext. rec.)."
Plat 9 Lot 5.

Another source, which creates a discrepancy, is Portage County Cemetery Records book found at Reed Library in Ravenna, which has Samuel Caldwell buried in Section 1 Row 1.
