She was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Munjor, to Peter C. and Agnes Pfannenstiel Dechant. She grew up in Hays, attended Hays schools and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in Hays.
On Aug. 26, 1953, she married Don Bernbeck in Hays. They lived in Manhattan for a short time before moving to Garden City in 1956. They then lived in Jetmore and Utica before moving in 1961 to Lakin, where they raised their family. She and her husband later lived in Eudora for a short time before moving to Denver in 1994. They have lived in the Denver area since then.
A homemaker, Mrs. Bernbeck also helped her husband with his business, Bernbeck Oil, in Lakin for many years. She later worked at Walmart for five years. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin and the Altar Society and attended Ave Maria Catholic Church in Parker. She enjoyed her pets, especially her dog, Stella, and also enjoyed drawing and sketching, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Devlon, Lance and Duane Bernbeck, all of Garden City; three daughters, Kallie Male of Eudora, Donna Ramos of Lakin, and Trisha Anderson of Parker; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard W. Bernbeck; a daughter, Deana Marie Bernbeck; four brothers; and six sisters.
Vigil service and rosary was at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin. Funeral Mass was at the church. Burial was at Lakin Cemetery.
