Harkness was owner of Harkness Accounting Service in Eaton Rapids and former director of the Accounting Department at Oldsmobile Division of General Motors Corporation in Lansing.
He was a pitcher in the old tri-county baseball league and a life member of Mason Lodge 70, F&AM. He was a 1914 graduate of Mason High School.
He is survived by his wife Hilda, a former Mason schoolteacher; 7 sons, Hallie Jr., of Mason, Richard of Ormond Beach, Florida, Robert of Lansing, Frederick of Vermontville, John of Eaton Rapids, William of State College, Pennsylvania and Rex, of Columbia, Connecticut; 2 daughters, Mrs. Hildred Whittum of Eaton Rapids and Mrs. Charles Rogers of Crystal Lake, Illinois, 30 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Services were held on August 26 at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial was in Felt Plains Cemetery, Leslie.
