After Harvey's death, Ruth moved to Waterloo and worked at Americana Nursing home for one year before going to St. Francis Hospital. She worked there until retiring in 1984. Ruth 's parents were renters, moving several times within this area of the state during her childhood. She had two brothers and two sisters. They moved to Bremer County southeast of Horton, when she was in third grade. As they moved on March 1, they could travel only via bob sled north of Waverly. They went across fields on top of snowbanks, over fences and a plow. When the snow and ice melted, the Cedar River flooded, moving the bridge at the north edge of Waverly. Her father hooked a block and tackle onto the south end of the bridge, and with his team of horses, pulled the bridge back into the right place. Later her family moved to Chickasaw County. At age seventeen, she graduated from Nashua High School having completed the Normal Training Course. She had to wait until she was eighteen, though, to teach in rural schools. She taught at Frederika #1 northwest of Tripoli for only two years, the second year, 1940, where she met and married Harvey
