James R. Merrill was born on 20 May 1840 in Canada, son of John B. Merrill and Bethier Caroline Ann Hogel. On 20 August 1850, James lived with his parents and siblings William, Mary, Wellington, McKenzie, Sarah, Clarissa, and Emily in London, Monroe County, Michigan. He had attended school in the last year.

James enlisted in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan as a Private in Company D of the 10th Michigan Cavalry on 3 October 1864. He was mustered out on 2 October 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.

On 11 July 1860, James was a laborer living with two other men in Milton, Grand Traverse County.

He was married first on 28 March 1862 in Whitewater township, Grand Traverse County to Fidelia Randall. Fidelia was born circa 1839 in New York.

On 9 August 1870, James and Fidelia and their children Marion and Iris lived in East Bay township. He was a farmer while she was keeping house. They owned $800 in real estate and $250 in personal property.

In June 1880, James and Fidelia lived in East Bay township with two children- Marion and Inis, as well as James' mother Bethier. James was working as a farmer while Fidelia was a housekeeper.

James applied for a Civil War invalid's pension on 26 July 1883.

Phidelia died in 1888 in Grand Traverse County.

James was married on 19 February 1889 in Grand Traverse County to Amelia A. White. D. K. Yokum was the minister who conducted the ceremony, which was witnessed by Mr. and Mrs. Clough. Amelia was born in November 1855 in England. She came to the United States in 1858.

In 1890, James lived in East Bay township. He reported that he had heart troubles from his Civil War service.

On 21 June 1900, James and Amelia lived in Blair township with a servant and three boarders. They were operating a hotel.

James died from chronic abscess and chronic gastritis on 5 April 1907 in Glen Arbor, Leelanau County, Michigan. Amelia applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 19 August 1917.

On 25 April 1910, Amelia lived at 415 Barlow Street with a boarder Lillian St. Clair.

On 2 January 1920, Amelia lived at 415 Barlow Street in Traverse City. On 12 April 1930, Amelia boarded with the Glenn Lile family at 415 Barlow Street.

Amelia died on 18 January 1933 in Grand Traverse County.

James and Amelia are buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

James and Phidelia (Randall)Merrill were the parents of two children:

i. WALTER MARION MERRILL was born circa 1864 in Michigan.
ii. INES MERRILL was born circa 1869 in Michigan.
