John M. Merrill
John M. Merrill served in Co. D, 10th Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted for one year at the age of twenty-six on October 3, 1864, at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was mustered in on October 3, 1864, and joined the regiment at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, on November 8, 1864. He was discharged on September 1, 1865, at Detroit, Michigan.
The 10th Michigan Cavalry was organized in the summer and fall of 1863 and was ordered to Lexington, Kentucky, where they received horses and camp and garrison equipment. The regiment was mustered out in October 1865 in Tennessee and returned to Jackson, Michigan, where the men were paid and disbanded in November 1865.
John McKenze Merrill was born in 1838 in Canada, the son of John B. and Bethias (Hogal) Merrill. John B. and Bethias were the parents of eight known children: William, Mary, Wellington, John M., James, Sarah, Clarissa, and Emily. John's brothers, Wellington and James, also served in the Civil War. James Merrill lived in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. (See the Wellington Merrill family story.)
John's wife, Elizabeth, was born in 1836 in New York. From 1870 until after 1890 they lived in East Bay Township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. John was a hotel keeper and Elizabeth a housekeeper.
John and Elizabeth had one son, John Merrill, who was born about 1862 in Michigan. He married Lillie May Murrell on October 24, 1886 at Elk Rapids, Antrim County, Michigan. Lillie was born in 1869 in Michigan. Both were residents of Acme, Michigan at the time of their marriage and John was a telegraph operator.
John and Elizabeth Merrill settled in Excelsior Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan, before 1900. This Elizabeth may have been a second wife as they were married about 1894. She was born on April 14, 1845, in Ohio to Jacob and Elizabeth (Hayes) Zarlman. Elizabeth died on June 30, 1911, in Excelsior Township, Kalkaska County. She is buried in the Excelsior Township Cemetery in Kalkaska County.
Civil War veteran John McKenzie Merrill died on May 27, 1907, at the home of his sister Mrs. William King. His funeral was held at the Baptist Church. He was survived by his son and four sisters. Mr. Merrill is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska, Michigan, in a lot owned by the G.A.R. A Civil War military headstone and a G.A.R. flag holder mark Mr. Merrill's grave. His brother, Wellington Merrill, is also buried in this lot.
