H. EUGENE BURGER, 89, of Fort Wayne, died Sunday, July 12, 2009. Born June 23, 1920, in Fort Smith, Ark., he was the son of Henry and Minnie (Quoss) Burger. He attended First Lutheran School, Fort Smith; graduated from North Side High School, Fort Smith and Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Ill.; and received his Masters degree from Northwestern University. He taught at St. Peter's Lutheran, Arlington Heights, Ill. from 1942 to 1945; started Immanuel Lutheran School, in Alexandria Va. 1945 and 1946; taught at Concordia, River Forest from 1946 to 1948; and at St. Paul's Lutheran School, Fort Wayne from 1948 to 1990, where he also served as Principal from 1949 to 1990. As a teenager, he dreamed of building a children's camp. He eventually found the site and built Camp Lutherhaven, Albion in 1949, and served as director until 1979. He started a swimming program for St. Paul's at the YMCA pool, in 1950, and taught swimming even into retirement to complete 50 years. He ran a Day Camp for the State Developmental Center for 30 years and served as chaplain for there when the host pastor was gone. He was St. Paul's tie with One Church-One Offender. He worked with the Fort Wayne Children's Home as a tutor. He was on numerous committees for the Lutheran Association of Elementary Education and also on committees for the YMCA. In retirement, he was a docent at the Lincoln Museum; tutored for the Neighborhood Connection at Brentwood School; served on the Fort Wayne Bicentennial Committee. He assisted at Gethsemane Lutheran Church from 1990 to 1995 and at New Life Lutheran Church from 1995 to 2005. He and his wife attended 60 Elderhostels. He was the recipient of many awards including Volunteer of the year for Lutheran Outreach, the Jefferson Award from WPTA, and the Sagamore of the Wabash from the State of Indiana in 2004. He married Mildred (Marty) Burger on June 11, 1950; she survives. Also surviving are children, Rev. Mark (Rosalind) Burger of Claremore, Okla.; Jean Burger of Fort Wayne; Anne (Peter) Hess of Hoagland; and Laura Burger of Fort Wayne; and grandchildren, Nathaniel Hess of Hoagland, Cole Burger of Omaha, Neb. and Gretchen (Daniel) Vera of San Antonio, Texas. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1126 S. Barr Street, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road. A private burial will be in Camp Lutherhaven, Albion.
