William sold his farm in Trumbull Co. Ohio and moved his family to Lawrence, Michigan in 1859. He purchased a saw mill, and his children grew up learning how to work in it. As it became profitable, he built a grist mill and then came into Hartford and remodeled the existing saw mill into a grist mill, which became one of the landmarks of the county. His mill was known as the Anderson Mill and eventually it became known as the Anderson Power Co, supplying power and light for the village of Hartford. His sons Julian and James Edward became partnership proprietors ran it together after the death of their father.
