Julian was born in Trumbull, Ohio but came to Lawrence, MI. at age 9 with his parents and siblings in 1859. His father William Anderson had sold his farm in Ohio and purchased a saw mill upon arriving in Michigan, and as that prospered, he also erected a grist mill. Next he came into Hartford and transformed the saw mill into a grist mill.

Julian was one of the 11 living children born to William & Esther Stebbins Anderson. His siblings were: Louise Sarah, William H, Eugene E, Charles Eugene, Lula Esther Ann, James E, Alphius S, George, Edward, and an unnamed baby boy who died at birth.

Julian and his brother James E became the proprietors of the Anderson Mill after the death of their father, and they also owned the electric light and power plant which furnished light and power for the village of Hartford. They had grown up from an early age working in the mills with their father, and spent most of their lives working in the mill.

Julian married Esther Rowland from Ohio in 1871. Her brother was Captain Rowland, who was well known. Together they had 3 children; Mabel who married Wright Gardner; Louise who married Walter Hartman; and Marion who married Ethel Clinton.
