Frances Curl Simon was my great grandmother. She was born on November 29, 1852 at Evansville, Indiana (altho some census records indicate she was born in Arkansas) and died October 9, 1923 at Carterville, MO.

Frances was the daughter of John Curl and Nancy Edmonds Curl.

John Curl's first wife was Elizabeth Gardner and they had son John (born in aprox 1837 in Indiana & died at Andersonville Prison during the Civil War) and daughter Elizabeth (nothing further is known about her). By the 1860 census, Elizabeth had died and John was now married to Nancy Edmonds. This census lists 2 additional children (besides John, Elizabeth & Frances): Brainard & Mary. One family member thought perhaps Brainard was also Elizabeth's son, but I believe him to be Nancy's son. Mary was Nancy's natural daughter.

Frances married Jacob Elam Simon (the son of George Simon and Celia Reger Simon) on August 17, 1873 at Kirksville, Adair Co, MO. They were married by R.H. Collins, Minister of the Gospel. This marriage was "witnessed by John Leach". Jacob, at the time of their marriage, was living at Bottsville (now Meadville), MO. They had 9 children: Nancy, Stella, Edward (my grandfather), Grace, Harry, Susie, Eva Lena, Mary Acelia and John Reger.

When Jacob died, as "a result of a freak wagon accident" (in 1892), Frances was left to raise her remaining 6 children. Three of their children had all died at a young age. Frances mourned the loss of her husband for the rest of her life, wearing "half-mourning gray during the week and black on Sundays when she attended the local Baptist Church". To provide for her family, she took in boarders and did laundry. She eventually received "a widow's pension" for the time that Jacob served during the Civil War.

Family members remember Frances as "a good & kind but grim woman who never raised her voice".

Frances died from "influenza" at the age of 78 years. She is buried along side Jacob and her 3 young daughters here at Oronogo Cemetery.

MO death certificate #30364 lists a different birth date for Frances. Info was given by a son, Harry.
