Joseph enlisted in the Prussian army in 1869 and served for about 12 years. Family lore says he was some type of man servant or aide-de-camp to Kaiser Wilhelm.
He married Anna Junker and emigrated to America between 1881 and 1885. They lived in Collinsburg and had only one child, Anna Marie.

He was born on October 3, 1848 in Germany to Frank Zormaier (Germany) and Elizabeth Gangel Zormaier (Germany); his occupation was coal miner; he died of stomach cancer on Aug. 22, 1906 and was buried in West Newton Cemetery on Aug. 24.
