Sarah was born in Fairhaven, MA, the daughter of Jonathan and Hannah (Mendall) Nye. This is recorded in Sarah Nye's bible.

Sarah Nye married Solomon Matthews, a ship builder. They lived in South Dartmouth, MA. Sarah had two children who did not live past infancy. One born in 1819 and Nye, born 1820. Then she had Desire b. 1822 and Solomon, Jr. b. 1826.

When her husband became ill, his business partner, Laban Thacher took sole responsibility for the business (I assume he bought Solomon's share) In 1829, her husband died of a stroke. With two small children to look after she got permission to sell off her property in S. Dartmouth, (it was a sexist thing in those days) and moved to Acushnet, MA, to live near her brothers Gideon and Obed Nye and others of the Nye Family.

She lived in Acushnet on Belleville Road at the head of the river with her two children until Solomon, Jr. went to California in 1849. Solomon returned in 1852 but left again for Milford, DE.

Sarah lived with her unmarried daughter until Desire died on October 14, 1865. Shortly after, she moved to Milford, DE to live with her son, Solomon.
Sarah died at his home in 1866.
