Obituary:
Martin Ysen died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Albertson, on Tuesday, June 22, 1948, at 8:10 a.m. He had been in failing health for for about two months. He underwent hospital treatment for ten days ending on May 2nd., his birthday, and since that time has spent his days at the home of his children, Carl Ysen, Mrs. Theodore Toftner and Mrs. Julius Albertwon. Mrs. Anna Flaaten, also a daughter, has assisted in caring for him.

Martin Ysen was born on May 2, 1852, at Sorums Parish, near Oslo, Norway, of parents Nils Ysen and Anna Thorsdatter Ysen. He was baptized and confirmed in this parish. His father died in Norway in 1867, and in 1875 the family came to America, those in the family then being, besides Martin Ysen, his twin brother, Bernt, his mother, and five other brothers and sisters. There were originally ten children but three died in Norway. They located at Lake Park, Minn., where they stayed until 1878 when they came to Norman County and filed on homesteads. They walked from their home in Lake Park to their new homesteads in this community.

Since 1878, Martin Ysen has made his home in the Gary community. He was married on Sept. 17, 1881, to Evrine Regine Berntsdatter Mauren. The ceremony took place in the log church of the North Wild Rice Congregation, the Rev. A.K. Sagen officiating. They lived on the homestead, this being the farm now occupied by Carl Ysen family.

To the Martin Ysens there were born five children: Ann, Bertha, Karen, Carl (who died in infancy) and Carl. Mrs. Ysen died on Dec. 26, 1920, after an illness of about two years. This was only a few months after the Martin Ysens had left the farm and moved to the village of Gary to make their home.

Martin Ysen was a charter member of St. Petri Congregation which was organized on Sept. 14, in the year 1879. He also served for many years as trustee of St. Petri Church, and in other capacities.

Surviving Martin Ysen are four of his children: Anna, Mrs. Anna Flaaten; Bertha, Mrs. Julius Albertson; Karen, Mrs. Theodore Toftner; and Carl Ysen. There are eighteen living grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Of these, all of the children and eleven of the granchildren and grea-grandchildren, (a total of fifteen) are residents of the Gary community.

In the death of Mr. Ysen, comes the loss of the last of the Charter Members of the St. Petri Church.

His age at the time of his death was 96 years, one month and twenty days.
