Barney Woodrow Marsh

Barney Woodrow Marsh, a long time resident of Enterprise, AL, passed away, Sunday, November 8, 2009 after a long illness. He was 87 years of age.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Frank Wells and Rev. Roger Stone officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 10, at Searcy Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302 or to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 302 North Main Street, Enterprise, AL 36330. Barney Marsh will lie in state one hour prior to funeral services.

Barney was a man of integrity. He was dependable, trusted, loved and respected by all who knew him. He exhibited love and compassion for his family, his extended family and friends.

Barney was a member of the First Baptist Church of Enterprise for over 50 years. He served as deacon for several terms and was a member and participant of the "Truth Seeker" Sunday School Class. Barney was a WWII Veteran who served with General Patton in the European Theater and was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Enterprise. He was also a charter member of the Boll Weevil Lions Club and a former mason. Along with four other citizens, Barney worked to establish the Enterprise State Jr. College .

A farmer at heart, after returning from war duty he began work with Metcalf Tractor and later became a partner in the business for a joyful 37 years. His time was then spent managing his rental property and assisting Christian Mission food delivery. Barney also enjoyed hunting and working with his hunting dogs.

He was the youngest member of his family and was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Magdelene and James Leonard Marsh; three sisters, Bessie (Garland) Nichols, Etta (Clayton) Sawyer, Jessie (Oscar) White; two brothers, Taft (Ruby) Marsh and Frank (Ethylene) Marsh and brother-in-law, Guy Melton.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Seroba Bowdoin Marsh; two daughters, Melinda (Bill) Lalor, Birmingham, AL; Alisa (Eric )Gyauch, Lexington, SC; four grandchildren, Katy Lalor, University of South Alabama College of Medicine; Marsh Lalor, Auburn University; Will Gyauch, Furman University; Megan Gyauch, Auburn University; a sister, Ann Melton, Huntsville, AL; many special nieces, nephews and their families.

The family is especially thankful to the doctors, nurses and staff of Medical Center Enterprise for their love and care as well as the loving help and care given by home caregivers and Wiregrass Hospice.
