Born in Abbeville County SC to Joshua and Jane nee Smith Cullins, he was the grandson of Moses and Ann Smith of Abbeville. Abner came to Indiana with his parents and siblings in the 1820's, settling in Jackson Twp., Fayette County, near the Scotch-Irish settlement of Bentley. He first married Elizabeth Steel in Fayette County. The 1840 Fayette County census shows them with a son under 5 years of age. There has thus far been no record of what happened to Elizabeth and their son. He then married Nancy Kerr. They were the parents of three daughters. Kate Cullins married Cassimer Wolf. Cornelia evidently never married. The story of the third daughter is unknown.
