She was the daughter of Jared and Hannah Hawks Jr.
She was a teacher in Philadelphia for many years and principal of a ladies seminary.
She died while on a world tour.

"The most noticeable monument is that to the memory of Mrs. Gardell [sic], and was erected at a cost of about $30,000. It is totally different in style and design from any other. It is of Italian marble, elaborate and ornate, the design and workmanship by statuary artists of European celebrity."
