His parents came to America from Germany, and lived in Pennsylvania, then migrated west to Illinois. His father and mother were Andreas and Elisabetha, who arrived in the United States on September 30, 1852. They sailed on the ship "Patrick Henry." They came with 2 children, and Leonard was their first child born in the U.S., nine months later.
Many of the Haag descendants are still here in the same area in Livingston County Illinois. Leonard Haag and his brothers helped found a Lutheran Church which is still in operation today in Cullom, Illinois.
Leonard was married first to Catherine Hack and she died very young, and very soon after the marriage, leaving no children. He then was a farm hand for the George Appel family after his first wife died. He is listed on the 1880 census with them, as a boarder and farmer.
He later married Elizabeth Appel, the daughter of the people he was working for. She was 16 at the time, much younger than he.
They had 12 children together, one of whom is my Dad's father, Leonard Haag, Jr.
Rest in peace great-grandfather.
