Jens Peterson was born in Askov, Denmark, Nov. 14, 1851. His parents were Peter and Ellen nee (Mogenson) Peterson. The father was a mason and a carpenter. He served three years in the war between Germany and Denmark. They were a prominent and well-to-do family in the native country. Jens was educated in the public schools of Denmark, then worked for wages until 1872, when he came onto America. He wrought in New York and Boston until 1876 when he came on to San Francisco. It was in 1883 when he took a homestead, a preemption and a timber culture claim north of Almira.

In 1889 he was united in holy wedlock with Miss Kjersen Lauridsen. To this union was born one son, Elmer, who preceded his father in death four years. Mrs. Kjersen Peterson passed away in 1898.

In 1899 Mr. Peterson was again united in holy wedlock to Miss Maren Olsen. Mrs. Maren Peterson passed away September 21, 1937.

Mr. Peterson was a respected Christian gentleman whose influence was felt in all his enterprises. He came to America with no capital and through diligent labors was blessed with a large share of this world's goods. He was an inmportant figure in farming, banking and business. Even though he was bless with a large shore of this world's goods, he had time to assist others on the road to progress. He was truly a pioneer; he will be remembered as one of those courageous men who supplied the vast Big Bend country in white settlement and improved its surroundings to make a better home for his posterity.

Mr. Peterson was baptized into the Christian Faith in infancy. He was instructed in the saving doctrines of the Lutheran church; he has throughout his life been active in teh Lurtheran church. He was instrumental in founding Our Savior's Lutheran church here in Almira. Even in old age his faithfulness at service to God is an example that is worthy of the high calling of Jesus Christ. The Lord hath blessed greatly; with long life hath he blessed his pilgrimage on earth.

Mr. Peterson was called from this life to his eternal home Saturday, April 15. He attained the ripe age of 87 years, 5 months and one day. He leaves to mourn his departure, one brother, John, one daughter, Mrs. Martha Franz, of Spokane, three grandchildren, Laurence, Frances and Norman.

The Lord has given and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord forever.
