Johnnie W. Conner, of Wrightsville Avenue, died on Tuesday, August 15, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He had been a resident of Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove for the last year following a debilitating injury.
Johnnie came to Wilmington in the early days of World War II to support the war efforts as a crane operator building Liberty ships for the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company. He lived on Airlie Road, the Seagate Community and Castle Hayne before finally moving to Wrightsville Avenue in the 1950?s. He was lucky to have lived, fished, and gardened in the Wrightsville Sound area in the 1940?s and subsequent decades. He participated in construction projects ranging from the CP&L Sutton Plant, the Belk Beery building (now the New Hanover County Public Library), to the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge, before retiring from the North Carolina State Ports Authority. He was a long time member and deacon at Seagate Baptist Church.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Conner and his daughter Patricia C. Bland (Steve).

He is survived by his children, Dr. Robert Conner (Elaine) of Jamestown, NC, Grady Conner (Nancy) of Dallas, TX, Linda Tartt (Randy) and Danny Conner (Martha) of Wilmington. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian Bland, Eric Bland, Lee Conner, Bethany Perkins, and Dr. Shane Tartt, and two great grand children, Tull Perkins and Sawyer Tartt.
