Robert (Bob) E. Kulek, one of seven children of John and Josephine (Prochaska) Kulek, was born in Littleton, Colorado, on January 17, 1922. Bob died on Friday, August 20, 1993, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 3 days.
He was educated at the Eckley School northwest of Guide Rock and attended college for one year. Bob served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, receiving air crew training at Fort Hayes, Kansas.
On January 1, 1945, in Mankato, Kansas, he was married to Rosemarie (Rhea) Brown. To this union five children were born.
Most of Bob's life was spent farming near Guide Rock. For five years he drove a freight truck in Nelson. He moved from the farm to Superior in 1984.
Bob was a member of the Superior Eagles and the Guide Rock American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and reading.
Preceding him in death were his parents; stepfather, William Engel; one son, Robert E. Kulek, Jr.; two brothers, William Kulick (sic) and Edward Kulek; and two sisters, Florence Delay and Ellen Sholtz.
Survivors include his wife, Rhea; one daughter, Jeanette Bates and her husband, Walter, of Hastings; three sons, Thomas Kulek and his wife Theresa, and Steven Kulek and his wife, Peggy, all of Hastings, and David Kulek of Lincoln; a daughter-in-law, Linda Kulek of Ainsworth; one brother, Floyd, of Red Cloud; on sister, Millie Giger of Gibbon and 9 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 23, 1993, at 10:30 a.m. from the Guide Rock United Methodist Church with the Revs. Larry and Peggy Michael-Rush officiating. Music was provided by Evelyn Thompson, vocalist, singing "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross", with Pat Hunter as organist. Casketbearers were Kevin Kulek, Bill Sholtz, Gene Giger, Jim Lynch, Jerry Lynch and Barry Collins. Interment with full military rites was in the Guide Rock Cemetery. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
