Pioneer Woman, England Native, Dies at Old Age
Provo, March 28 - Mrs. Emma Johnson, pioneer of Utah, 85, died at the home of her daughter, mrs. Monroe Whiting, at Nephi yesterday afternoon from a complication of diseases incident to old age. She was born at Pirvin, Worcestershire, England, June 8, 1840, the daughter of William and Jane Haynes James. She came to this country when a girl of 16 and crossed the plains with Captain Willes' handcart company, walking all the way from Florence, Neb., to Salt Lake, where she arrived November 9, 1856.
In March, 1857, she married Lorenzo Johnson of Springville, to which union nine children were born, six of whom survive as follows: Mrs. Ozella Rowley, Oakley, Idaho; Mrs. Orissa Rowley, Provo; Mrs. William Bowles, Nephi; Mrs. Monroe Whiting, Nephi; Mrs. Sylvester Boswell, Nephi, and George A. Johnson, Salt Lake City. One sister, Mrs. James Dangerfield of Provo; fifty-five grandchildren, 190 great-grandchildren and twenty two great-great-grandchildren are living.
Funeral services will be held in the Provo First ward chapel Tuesday, March 30, at 12 o'clock noon. Friends may view the body at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Ellis Palmer, 429 East Sixth North street, prior to the services. Interment will be in the Provo City cemetery.
