8 Aug 1862 he enlisted in the 112th Regiment New York Volunteers, as a private, and participated in much of the marching and fighting that followed, until the close of the war, through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. Was promoted to non-commissioned and then to commissioned officer, and was, just before the close of the war, again recommended for promotion.
In the winter of 1865-'66, he entered the Western Homaopathic Medical College, at Cleveland, OH., where he graduated, February 27th, 1867. He located in Hillsboro, Oh, where he built up a large practice.
He married Sarah E. Keeler 12 Nov 1868 at East Saginaw, Saginaw Co., MI and they had 5 children
