Funeral services for Donald James Franse, 85, of Portales will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, November 5, 2009, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with William Rodden of Albuquerque officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Steve Franse, John Franse, Jimmy Franse, Josh Franse, Robert Burnett and William Rodden serving as pallbearers.
Donald James Franse died on Sunday, November 1, 2009, at the Farwell Convalescent Center following an illness complicated by a broken hip.
Donald was born on Christmas Day, 1923, to Walter and Jessie Franse in the Red Lake Community. He was the 5th of twelve children. He lived his entire life in Portales. Donald attended the Portales Public Schools and was a graduate of E.N.M.U. Donald was also an employee of E.N.M.U., retiring from that institution as the main Electrician.
As a lifelong resident of Portales, Donald was very interested in the history of New Mexico and was particularly aware of how climate and population changes have affected farming and ranching. He had a particular interest in the Red Lake Community where his grandparents homesteaded in 1906.
While at E.N.M.U., Donald played football and was a lifelong, avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Donald was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother, Clarence; his sister, Carolyn Reese, and an infant sister, Rusha Nell.
He is survived by two brothers, Roy of Clovis and Ralph of Farwell, TX; six sisters, Marie Mackechnie, Thelma Anderson, and Helen and Letha Franse all of Clovis, Betty McCormick of Woodland Hills, CA, and Ida Purdum of Garden Grove, CA.
