Aagot Alfsdtr and Od Albertson

Åagot Alfsdtr was born August 22, 1831 on the Mokliev farm in Suldal, Rogaland, Norway and was christened in the Suldal Parish on September 18, 1331. [Suldal Parish Record, LDS Film 0126354. Her parents names are given as "Alf Augustinusson and Britta Bjednesdtr, Mokleiv." The Mokleiv farm where Åagot was born is on the "Suldalsvatnet" 1:50,000 topographical map 69 W, 07 N. ]

In 1841, when Åagot was ten years old, her family moved from the Mokleiv farm to the Indre Selland farm near Sand, Norway. The Selland farm is on Hylsfjorden. [See the "Sauda" 1:50,000 topographical map at 60 W, 05 N].

On July 1, 1854, Åagot married Od Albertson at the Sand Parish in Rogaland, Norway. [Sand Parish Record, LDS Microfilm 1282672, Item 7. The marriage record indicates she was from the Selland farm at the time of her marriage and gives her age as 23.]

Od Albertson was born on Christmas Eve, 1821 on the Tjordalen farm which is in the same Parish (Suldal) where Åagot was born. He was christened the day after Christmas, on December 26, 1821. [Suldal Parish Record, LDS Film 0126354. His name is spelled "Aad". His parents names are given as "Albrigt Aadson and Herborg Jonsdatter, Tjordalen". "Gamle Suldal" p. 519, records his name as "Odd Albertson Tjordal." The Tjordalen farm is about one mile east of Suldal in Rogaland, Norway. See the "Sand" 1:50,000 topographical map at 61 W, 98 N.]

After their marriage, Od and Ågot lived at the Indre Selland farm in Norway (where Åagot had lived since the age of 10). Here they had eight children, two of whom, both named Bertha Helena, died as infants.

Economic conditions were very difficult, so the family decided to emigrate to America. On April 22, 1874, the minister of the Sand Parish wrote a letter of introduction on behalf of Od Albertson and his family. The letter is in the possession of Oreen Selland Jackson. The translation is as follows:

"Carpenter, Od Albertson Tjosdal, born the 24th day of December, 1821, in Suldal's Parish, married the 1st day of July, 1854 to Aagot Alfsdatter born in 1831 in Mokleiv. They intend to emigrate to America with their six children in company with her parents and other relations. They are members of the State Lutheran Church and in good standing under hard times and circumstances. Their children are: (1) Albert Johan born 5 August and baptized 4 September, 1859; (2) Alf Augustin born 21 November, 1861 and baptized 20 April, 1862; (3) Lars born 6 December, 1863 and baptized 15 May, 1864; (4) Od August born 1 March and baptized 29 March, 1866; (5) Henrikke born 12 October and baptized 22 November, 1868; (6) Ole born 22 October, 1873 and baptized 23 November, 1873. Done without pay by Ule Thornoe, Minister for Sand Parish, Ryfylke, Norway."

On May 5, 1874, Åagot, her husband Od, and their six children sailed from Stavanger, Norway on the ship S.S. Brodrene. They arrived at Quebec, Canada on 18 June, 1874. On the same ship were Ågot's parents (Alf Augustinussen and Brita Bjednesdtr), Åagot's sister Anna (married to Lars Rasmussen Lundervold) and their children, and Åagot's brother Hadle Selland (married to Anna Samsonsdatter) and their children. Od Albertson used the name Selland (from the Selland farm in Norway where they had been living). The ship list gives his name as Od A. Selland.

From Quebec, the family travelled to Minnesota, where they settled in the Norwegian farming community at Beaver Township, Fillmore County. By 1885, the Albertsons were living in the Red River Valley in Clay County, Minnesota.

Their son Albert (who used the last name of Selland) married Inger Regine Thompson on June 4, 1892 at Ada, Minnesota. Regine was born March 21, 1869 in Fillmore County, Minnesota. Their marriage was an arranged marriage. Later in life, Regine told her teenage granddaughter Oreen with a smile, "I learned to love him."

Od and Ågot Abertson moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington in 1895 along with their son Albert, his wife Regine, and their infant son Orrin.

Od Albertson passed away in 1896 and Åagot in 1898. They are buried together in the Seabold Cemetery on Bainbridge Island. Their son Alf is buried in the same plot.
