Madison - Arthur E. Bates, age 79, died on Sunday, July 12, 1992, in a Sun Prairie health care center. He was born on September 15, 1912, in Nebraska, the son of Frank and Hannah (Haack) Bates and has been a Madison resident for the past 75 years. He was an electrician for Oscar Mayer and Company from 1941 to 1977 and from 1950 to 1968, operated Art and Mike's Place with his brother, Mike, near Oscar Mayer's. He was an avid bowler and fisherman and enjoyed pinnolce and Cubs basesball. He was an active church member, attending Bashford United Methodist Church, Sherman Avenue United Methodist Church and the Midvale Community Lutheran Church. He was a member of Oscar Mayer Local # 538 and was a member of its executive board and bargaining committee. He is survived by a daughter Elaine Tomlinson of Madison; a son, William (JoAnne) Bates of Madison; six grandchildren, Lynn Egeness of Kenosha, Diane Lawry of Madison, Terry Brundish of Cottage Grove, Joy Bates of Deerfield, Michael and Danny Bates of Madison; a great grand-daughter, Rachael Lawry; three step-children, Phillip Small of Milwaukee, Donald Small of Madison and Sue Palmer of Middleton; six step-grandchildren; a brother, Everette (Mike) Bates of Madison; and several nieces. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irma, in 1972; his second wife, Alice, in 1992; and sisters, Rosella Bates and Norma Evarts. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 15, 1992, in the Schroeder Cress Funeral Home, 3325 East Washington Avenue, with the Rev. Dianne Reistroffer and Rev. Marjorie Rice-Myers officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Sun Prairie Health and Retirement Center.
