Age 89, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at Belmont Nursing Home. He was born on July 3, 1925, in Madison, the son of Frank and Hannah (Haack) Bates. Mike graduated from Madison East High School in 1943. He served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific as a Gunner Mate 3rd Class. Mike worked at Oscar Mayer for four years, owned Art and Mike’s place tavern for 16 years, and as a custodian for Madison East High School for 22 years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and was a Chicago Cubs fan and UW-Badger football die-hard. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Norma Evarts and Rosella Bates; two brothers, Art Bates and Lester “Skeeter” Bates; ex-wife, Harriot Dalbers; nieces, Elaine Tomlinson, Patty Mann, and Mary Brunner; and nephew, Clifford Evart.
