The son of Nathaniel McCracken and Arissa Ann Cates both born in Tennessee and settled in Missouri around 1838. A brother of James Newell McCracken of Livingston, Montana.

He married Edith Ann Davis on Sept. 17, 1870 in Polk County, Missouri.

A carpenter by trade and a livestock producer.
