Howard, the oldest of six sons, grew up in the Olive Hill community. On June 7, 1933, he was united in marriage to Mildred Ida Shaffer. To this union, three sons: Tex, Don and Leo were born. They lived on a farm northeast of Superior where he farmed for almost 30 years when his health forced him to retire. He moved to Superior in 1960.
Howard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Superior.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Ted, and one granddaughter, Diane Blackstone.
Survivors included his wife, Mildred; three sons, Rex of Superior, Don of Alamagordo, New Mexico, and Leo of Superior; nine grandchildren, Sherri Pool (sic) and Joni Blackstone, children of Rex and Doris; Susan, Kevin and Crystal Blackstone, children of Don and Linda; Kelly Andreasen, Daren, Barry and James Blackstone, children of Leo and Jeanine; one great grandson, Jason Poole; four brothers, Harry, Cecil and Paul, all of Superior and Jim of Brawley, California and other relatives and friends.
Howard was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. he (sic) has an abounding love for his family and was endlessly devoted to them. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 1, 1984 at 2:00 p.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska. Rev. John Besore officiated. Music was provided by Jeff Poulos, soloist, singing "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden" with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were: LeVern Erickson, Leslie Erickson, Leonard Erickson, Wayne Schultz, Leonard Rempe and Glenn Ridle. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Nebraska.
