C.L. "Lee" Cooper, 72, of Newton died August 1 [2002] at Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the First Baptist Church in Newton with interim Pastor David Smiley officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The son of Gilbert and Mabel Butler Cooper, he was born Oct. 19, 1929 in Denver, Colo., and grew up in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and lived in California following his military duty. He moved back to Newton in 1963. He worked as a tool grinder for the Maytag Company for 29 years, retiring in 1991.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Van Hoosen on Aug. 30, 1963, in Newton.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served on the Stewardship Board, American Legion Post #111, and VFT Post #1655. He was a two term Newton City Councilman, and had served on numerous boards, including United Way, Habitat for Humanity, HAND, Red Rock Area Community Action Program, Willowbrook Adult Day Care Center, Advisory Boards of Park Centre, the Iowa Council of Senior Citizens, RSVP and JCVP.

He is survived by his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Janelle Cooper of Cedar Rapids, and Craig and April Cooper of Kellogg; a daughter and son -in-law, Christine and Jason Norris of Newton; seven grandchildren; a sister, Roma Ault of Mitchellville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Nannette Lee Mettler
