Burgess were crossing the railroad track about two hundred yards from the depot in the latters automobile, the rear part of the machine was struck by the engine of train No. 38. Just before the accident when the operation of the automobile saw that a collision was imminent, he told Mr. Hilton to jump for his life. They both jumped but Mr. Hilton fell between the rails and was struck by the train, being killed instantly, Burgess narrowly escaping. In the mean time the gasoline tank was struck by the engine and the combined effects of the explosion and the collision the machine was torn into fragments. This is one of the saddest accidents that ever occurred in Edwardsville - - the life of a 70 year old man being crushed beneath the cruel wheels of a train. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved wife and relatives.
