The memorial in the Old Red River Cemetery shows a birth date for William L. Hilton as 1840. According to William Lillard's brother, James Coleman Hilton, William Lillard changed his birth date from 1834 to 1840 to make him 6 years younger, although James Coleman offered no explanation why this was done. Therefore, the grave marker in Old Red River Cemetery shows an erroneous birth date. Another discrepancy with the life of William Lillard Hilton deals with his date of death. Recorded family history says he died on 10 Oct 1868, but the grave marker reflects 24 Oct 1868 as his date of death. The October 31, 1868 edition of the Bossier Banner newspaper (page 2, col. 1) makes reference to the death of William L. Hilton as having occurred "last week". This would seem to indicate that 24 Oct would be the more logical date of death.

William Lillard Hilton was married two times, and each marriage lasted only a short period of time. He first married Catherine G. Thurmond in Coweta County, Georgia on 19 Feb 1861. This marriage ended with her death on 27 Sep 1861, seven months after their marriage. He married a second time, this time to Emily Frances Arnold in Benton, Louisiana on 18 Jan 1866. This marriage ended with his death on 24 Oct 1868. There were no children from either marriage.
