He is the baby of the family who was the first casualty from Wayne County for WWI. He never saw combat, but was killed from a strep infection that was running rampant through Camp Zachary Taylor. I never really realized before I looked into Austin's death that penicillin wasn't even discovered until 1928, and the first actual practical use wasn't until WWII and that was only for the military. It wasn't available to the public until after 1945! In addition to his headstone he is memorialized on the Doughboy in the center of downtown Monticello.
