He was the son of Labon Gravely (Gravlee) and Mary Blythe. He married Martha Cara Fowler on 17 February 1831 in Blount County, Alabama. He served in the Alabama state legislature between 1860 and 1861. He was a wealthy farmer and also engaged in mining.
