He was the son of William Lafayette Gravlee and Martha Cara Fowler. He may have been born in 1839 (from another source). He served in Captain F. A. Gamble's Company in Alabama's 28th Infantry Regiment, Company K of the C.S.A. as a Junior Second Lieutenant. He died from both wounds at Wild Cat Gap in Kentucky at Bragg's Retreat from the north in October 1862 and the amputation of his leg above the knee in a Montgomery, Alabama hospital later.
