Sarah Elizabeth McKie Hyde went to her heavenly home on Sunday, September 11, 2016. Sarah's sweet spirit and infectious smile endeared her to all who met her. She exemplified deep devotion to family and friends daily throughout her 94 years. Though she will be sorely missed, her beautiful legacy will live on through generations.

Sarah was born November 26, 1921. She was the fifth of eight children born to Fannie Fern Carter McKie and Milton Polk McKie. She spent her youth having fun times with her brothers and sisters, playing "skin the cat" on Uncle Dan's arms, helping Grandmother Carter in her flower garden and staying with her aunt Lena Maude "Auntie" Carter, and aunt Bruce Carter Hurt. McKie family Sunday dinners were often large gatherings that included the minister and one friend for each of the 8 children. These years developed Sarah's love and loyalty to family and friends, her love of gardening and adventure, and her giving nature. Sarah studied home economics at Mississippi State College for Women.

Sarah married her high school sweetheart, Byron L. Hyde, on her 21st birthday with her favorite aunt, Lena Maude "Auntie" Carter and Byron's sister, Louise Hyde as their witnesses. This was a quiet ceremony in the minister's study at Capital Street Church of Christ in Jackson, MS. After moving with her husband as he served in the U.S. Air Force, the couple made their home in Jackson, MS. Sarah taught school and also worked as a telephone operator in the years before the births of their two daughters. She was active in organizations involving her family and during her children's early years was an officer in Kiddie Club and later a vital member of the PTA and Girl Scout leader. Sarah was a member of Belvedere Church of Christ and Siwell Road Church of Christ. She was an avid gardener and a gifted seamstress, making many of her children's and granddaughter's clothes and costumes for school plays. She also loved to read, completed beautiful crafts and was a wonderful cook. As a grandmother, she went over and beyond the call of duty! She enjoyed visits from her granddaughters taking them to all sorts of activities. Though confined to a wheel chair in later years, she continued to have the same vibrant and uplifting personality. She always enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She showed pictures and told everyone all about her great grandson, a constant source of smiles and enjoyment.

Sarah Elizabeth McKie Hyde was preceded in death by her husband, Byron L. Hyde; parents, Fannie Fern Carter McKie and Milton Polk McKie; brothers and sisters, Mary Virginia McKie Johnson, William Carter "Bill" McKie, Frances "Sister" McKie Poag, Edward Earl "Dick" McKie, Robert Polk "Bob" McKie, James Oliver "Jim" McKie; and favorite aunt Lena Maude "Auntie" Carter.
