James' mother married secondly about 1778 to Abraham Perry of Cumberland (Harnett) County, N.C., Johnston County, N.C., Montgomery County, N.C. and Buncombe County, N.C. Abraham Perry posted an administrator's bond for the estate of James Carrell on July 30, 1778 in Cumberland (Harnett) County, N.C.

Husband of Rhoda Stephenson (born about 1777 Johnston County, N.C., died September 11, 1861 Dale County, Ala.), daughter of Solomon Stephenson, Jr. (born about 1740/45 Isle of Wight (Southampton) County, Va., died before May 29, 1781 Johnston County, N.C.) and his wife Anna ["Nancy"] Johnson (died after November 5, 1791 Johnston County, N.C.) of Johnston County, N.C.

James Carrell married Rhoda Stephenson on February 1, 1792 [marriage bond dated January 30, 1792] in Johnston County, N.C. John Carrell served as bondsman. Rhoda's surname is abbreviated as Stevens on the marriage bond.

James Carrell resided on Camp Branch, west/southwest of McGee's Crossroads in present day Pleasant Grove Township, Johnston County, N.C.
