Adam Meckes was one of the partners in "Butz, Meckes, and Co." The company owned 1200 acres acres of timberland and had a saw mill on Stony Creek which they operated for 8 to 10 years and then sold. The mill burned down in 1860 and was not rebuilt.

Around 1850, Adam Meckes established a tavern and hotel near Albrightsville which he ran for 15 to 20 years. The building was torn down many years ago. He was a school director of Penn Forest Township, Carbon County, in 1849, 1853, 1856, and 1867. In 1850 Adam Meckes, age 36 a farmer, was living in Penn Forest Twp., Carbon Co., PA, with his wife, Matilda age 30, and six children; Sarah age 12, Joseph age 10, William age 8, Lucy age 6, Henry age 4, and Josiah age 2. Also living in the household was Jacob Hopple age 23 a laborer. Adam owned real estate valued at $1,000. Adam was living next door to his brother, Philip Meckes, and his family. In 1880 Adam Meckes, age 66 a farmer, was living in Penn Forest Twp., Carbon Co., PA, with his wife, Matilda Meckes age 60, and five of their unmarried children; son Jerome Meckes age 25 a laborer, son James (actually Timothy) Meckes age 23 a laborer, son Pierce Meckes age 20 a laborer, daughter Cascillia Meckes age 18, and daughter Jane Meckes age 16.
