He joined the military in May of 1944 and honorably served his country during WWII and on Luzon Island in the Philippines. In August of 1946 he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He married Alma Ditmore in Richfield, Colo. on Jan. 1, 1950 and their marriage was sealed June 5, 1951 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Willis worked for the D&RGW Railroad and later at Grefco in Antonito where he retired as a maintenance superintendent after 30-years.
He is a member of the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints and held numerous callings. Willis enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He was well respected and loved by everyone who knew him.
Willis is survived by his wife of 59 years Alma Crowther of the family home; daughters Ruth (Garey) Neubauer of Hackett, Ark., Carolynn Crowther of Buna, Texas, Jill Loveday of Durango, Colo., Annette (Tim) Roberts of Walsenburg, Colo. and Charlotte (Dan) Knox of Colorado Springs; ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Afton Scheibe, Effie Gustin, Clyde Crowther, Paul Crowther and infant sister Lovinnia Crowther.
A funeral service will be held on Wed., Oct. 7, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the Sanford First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial will follow services in the Sanford cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tue., Oct. 6, 2009 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Manassa and also Wednesday morning before the service from 9 until 9:45 a.m. in the Relief Society room in the church. Rogers Family Mortuary is in care of the arrangements.
