Elmer Smith of Lizton died Jan. 19 (2003) at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon. He was 84. Born March 19, 1918, in Knox County, Kentucky, he was a son of Floyd Smith and Rose (Gibson) Smith Burnett. He married Bessie Lovins who survives.
Mr. Smith operated the Phillips 66 gas station in Lizton for more than 20 years before retiring in 1979. He then operated Smith's Bait and Tackle Shop where he also sold garden supplies. He was a fire chief for the Lizton Fire Department and a charter member of the Lizton Lions Club.
Additional survivors include sons Roy Smith of Wallace, Tommy Smith of Pittsboro, Glenn Smith of Jamestown and Carl Smith of Carmel; daughters Loretta Garland and Thelma Joseph, both of Lizton and Joan Mohr of Jamestown; a brother, Archie Smith of Salem; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Preceding him in death were a son, General Smith, and a brother, Pierce Smith.
Services were Jan. 31 at the Porter Funeral Home in Jamestown with his grandson Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Interment was at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Lizton. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
