Elmo was born December 12, 1883 in Boston, Mass. At the age of 4 years, both of his parents passed away. He was taken to an orphan's home in New York. He lived there until the age of 15. Then he was taken to Marysville, Missouri, where he worked and made his home until he was 19 years old. He then moved to Armour, South Dakota and worked as a brakeman on the railroad. He was fireman on the first passenger train that came to Winner, South Dakota. Then he worked in the round house.

Elmo married Katherine Kreiger of Wood, South Dakota on June 27, 1916 at White River, South Dakota. To this union seven children were born.

They lived for two years in Winner, then moved to a farm north-east of Wood. They lived there for seventeen years.
