R. Burnham Moffat's book, The Barclays of New York: Who They Are and Who They Are Not, and Some Other Barclays, 1904, p 241. Many more in his family are in this source.

The 2 brown plats were owned by Hugh Barclay in the 1700's. Alexander T. Barclay sold the 421 acre tract closer to the Natural Bridge called The Red Mill Tract to John Waskey in 1823 for $7,000 .

Land Grant from the Land Office Treasury Warrant #506 (or 505) dated 1 May 1813, was recorded on 31 Dec 1821 in Rockbridge Co., VA. It describes the tiny lot of 11 1/4 acres, on the waters of Cedar Creek a branch of James River adjoining the land of THOMAS JEFFERSON and the heirs of ELIHU BARCLAY deceased (his kin). (Ex-President Jefferson then owned 157 acres including the Natural Bridge.)

This old newspaper (complete issue) was handed down to me by my grandmother, whose kin was related to him.
23 Nov 1848 The Valley Star, Lexington, VA, obit of Alexander T. Barclay which takes up the entire long column. Sadly it was then acceptable to own people - slaves, a horrible part of our history. Photo of the bottom section is below. The entire obit says:
EXTENSIVE SALE OF VALUABLE REAL ESTATE, SLAVES AND PERSONAL PROPERTY IN ROCKBRIDGE, VA.
As the Executor of Alexander T. Barclay deceased and under the authority of his will I shall proceed on the 23rd day of November next, at his late residence about half a mile from the town of Lexington, to sell, by way of public auction a large amount of
VALUABLE PERSONAL PROPERTY CONSISTING OF HORSES, MULES, CATTLE, SHEEP, HOGS AND MILCH COWS.
Also a quantity of Household Furniture, Plantation Utensils, and other property of various description. All of which is in fine order and condition.
The above property will be sold on a credit of nice months on all sale of $10. and upwards. For all purchases under $10. cash will be required.
The sale will commence at 10 o'clock A.M. and will continue from day to day until completed. The subscriber also offers for sale privately 17 likely and valuable
SLAVES
of both sexes the property of the testator. They will be sold on liberal terms at any time on application made by the Subscriber.

FARM, called Sycamore, on which the testator resided. It lives adjoining the town of Lexington, Virginia. To a gentlemen who is dis_____ of educating his family under his own eye, ____desirable situation could not be _____ - being near enough the town to enjoy all its advantages, yet so far removed as to avoid many of its annoyances. near 200 of which is in wood, - which sells readily in town at $2 a load - 400 cleared, and in a fine state of improvement of capable of producing the heaviest crop of grain or grass our climate will mature - and all well inclosed, with water in every field and lot and

amply sufficient for all the purposes of the farm and which may be increased if desired. The Testator spent twenty years of his life in endeavors to make it a fine _________ grazing estate, and his efforts have________ without success. The purchaser will find every improvement not of necessity only, but of comfort and convenience that he would desire.
The buildings have all with two exceptions been put up within 15 or 18 years.

THE DWELLING HOUSE ((in photo above))
of brick - very large - and conveniently arranged for the accommodation of a large family - it contains ten rooms besides fine large passages and porches and also basement and garret - the basement is divided as above and is dry and airy. Attached to the dwelling is a kitchen and work room.
The negro houses are of brick, well ventilated and capable of accommodating all the hands necessary to operate the farm. The meat house is two stories - the lower story used as an eating house for the negroes. There is a fine dairy convenient with excellent water - a lumber house with cider and apple cellar and by the way a first rate
ORCHARD
of select fruit to fill it - Carriage house - Blacksmith's Shop - Carpenter Shop and Stabling for more than 20 horses - Pigery - Wagon House - Corn House and Swisher Barn 50 by 22 feet - underneath the threshing floor there is a granary 26 by 30 feet, and 10 feet high - built of brick - the one end of the basement is occupied by the horse power of the threshing machine - the other appropriated to the farm implements. I think it unnecessary to say more to induce persons desiring to buy such property to view it - then they can see and judge for themselves.
The above tract of land is offered for sale privately on fair and liberal terms, and if not sold privately, will be offered for sale, at public auction on the premises, at a future day, of which due notice will be given.
