Ronald H. Garten


Ronald H. Garten, 82, of Piney View, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at his home following an apparent heart attack.

Born May 16, 1917, at Pence Springs, he was the son of the late Roy Lee Garten and Regina Pearl Lilly Garten.

Mr. Garten was a former bookkeeper for Greenbrier Dairy, was the former owner and operator of Artistic Upholstery and was a retired self-employed carpet installer.

He was a member of the Calloway Heights Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he had served in the 108th Infantry Headquarters. He had served during WWII in locations in the Philippines, Hawaii and Guadal canal.

Mr. Garten had been a resident of Piney View for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Virginia Garten, on Nov. 30, 1999; a brother, Rodney Garten; and three sisters, Pauline Miller, Virginia Gurack and Mae Jean Hart.

Survivors include a son, Ronald H. Garten Jr. and wife Carolyn of Lanark; a daughter, Elizabeth Diane Hunt and husband Larry of Piney View; four grandchildren, Joseph Aaron Hunt, Nathan Wilson Hunt, Nicholas Garten and Mary Smith; two stepgrandchildren, Suzanna Burdette and Bruce Messer; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Isaac Smith and Sara Colosi; two brothers, Herbert Garten and wife Edith of Piney View and Randall Garten and wife Carolyn "Pinky" of Liberty, Mo.; five sisters, Ruby Morris of Piney View, Wilda Holiday and husband Ted of Richmond, Va., Dana Jo Haynes and husband B.M. "Buck" of Newport News, Va., Mary Alice McCoy and husband C.W. "Mac" of Friendswood, Texas, and Kitty Sue Gill and husband Ted of Martinez, Ga.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Calloway Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Parker and the Rev. Cecil Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and at the church one hour before services.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
